Enjoying Hasselback potatoes on Slimming World or other diets

If you follow Slimming World, you will know that oil is largely avoided and advised against. This doesn’t mean that you can’t use oil when cooking, but it does mean you would be sensible to reduce the amount of oil you use and, when you can, use alternatives like low-calorie cooking spray.

If you use potatoes and low-calorie cooking spray rather than oil, this recipe would be syn-free on Slimming World. Using oil, however, would add syns with 1 tbsp of oil, usually being around six syns.

Any toppings you choose would possibly be syns on Slimming World, such as cheese or butter. When it comes to cheese, you may be able to have this and still avoid syns if you use a healthy extra a choice for the cheese.

On other diets, it will come down to different plans; most allow potatoes to be enjoyed in moderation and sensible portion sizes and would also ask any oil or butter be calculated.

The calories in Hasselback potatoes will vary depending on the size of the potatoes used and the portion size chosen. However, the calories are usually minimal.

I have suggested 200g of potatoes per portion for this recipe for a side dish, but feel free to adjust accordingly.

What to serve with air fryer Hasselback potatoes

When it comes to serving hasselback potatoes, it’s understandable to feel uncertain about what other foods to serve with them. Fear not, my friends, I am here with some ideas.

First up, consider pairing your potatoes with a delicious protein such as grilled steak, tofu or roasted chicken. Alternatively make something else in the air fryer like Air Fryer Lemon Pepper Wings. For vegetables why not just add something simple like Air Fryer Peppers and Onions?

For a lighter option, serve them with a salad with crunchy veggies and a tangy vinaigrette. Alternatively, how about a well-seasoned vegetable medley or some grilled asparagus to perfectly complement these amazing potatoes?

Making the Hasselback potatoes

Preparation time: 10 minutes

Cooking time: 30-35 minutes

Serves 4 as a side dish

Ingredients:

  • 800g baby potatoes
  • 1.5 tbsp olive oil or low-calorie cooking spray
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions:

Prep the potatoes: Rinse the potatoes under cold water and trim any necessary eyes. Then, gently pat them dry using kitchen towels.

Preparing the Hasselback cut: Slice the potatoes vertically to about 3/4 through the potato as closely as possible together for the best visual effect. Make sure to place chopsticks or cutlery handles on each side of the potato, so you don’t fully cut them through.

Season the potatoes: Drizzle or spray the Hasselback-cut potatoes with olive oil or low-calorie cooking spray, ensuring each section is evenly covered. Season them with salt to taste.

Air-fry the potatoes: Preheat your air fryer to 175°c (350°f). Arrange the prepared potato slices in the air fryer basket, ensuring they lay flat, and cook for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown. Make sure to flip them over halfway through the cooking process.

  1. Serve and enjoy: Once the potatoes are golden brown and crispy, serve them while hot, alongside your choice of main course.
