The Hare and Hounds in Dore – A review

We were recently invited to The Hare and Hounds in Dore which is close to Sheffield to try out their food and drinks. We were offered money off our meal in return for sharing it with you however all opinions are my own and those of my fellow diners.

The Hare and Hounds pub reopened earlier this year after a refurbishment. We had never been so we were a little unsure what to expect however the menu on their website sounded appealing.

The atmosphere of The Hare and Hounds

When we arrived it was obvious that the atmosphere was very homely and welcoming. It was clean and tidy with a busy but relaxed atmosphere. We noticed that on the night of our visit there was a singer due to perform.

As with these things we did not know how loud the singer would be or if it would stop us from enjoying our meal and chat. We were pleasantly surprised. The singer was amazing and did not stop us from chatting too. The music was the perfect volume for a nice evening out with friends.

Four of us enjoyed a starter and main course with drinks and cocktails. I and Stuart went along with Stuart’s sister Clare and her husband James. We rarely manage to get a night out with them so it was lovely.

The starters

There was a lovely choice of starters with either small plates or sharers. The small plates were available individually for prices from £2.99 to £4.49. If a few of you are dining you can choose 3 for £10 or 5 for £15. We chose five for £15 between the four of us.

We had nachos for one and were surprised at the portion size. Additionally, we ordered a soup of the day which on our visit was tomato and basil, loaded garlic bread with cheese and mushrooms, halloumi fries and southern fried chicken pieces.

All the starters were lovely and thoroughly enjoyed though we couldn’t help but notice a little difference in their sizes. None of us finished them feeling left out or extremely hungry though. They were a perfect selection of nibbles before our main courses.

Main course

For our main courses, we were spoilt for choice. I chose Cauliflower and sweet potato katsu curry. It was lovely to have interesting vegetarian choices available as in so many places it is a veggie burger or some kind of tomato-based pasta dish!

Clare decided on the surf and turf after much deliberation. She likes her steak medium rare and it came out cooked to perfection. As it is served on a hot skillet however it continues to cook a little as you are eating it so this is something to be mindful of as you chose how to have your steak cooked. Serving the meal like this was great though as it means it stays hot throughout the meal.

Stuart chose the double Tandoori chicken burger. He thoroughly enjoyed it and said it was a nice change to the usual burger choices. It looked great and came with chips. The burger itself was topped with onion bhajis and minted sour cream.

James opted for the mixed grill. He asked for the sausages to be well done so don’t be alarmed at the picture showing quite well-done sausages, this was what he requested. James’ meal also came served on a skillet which kept it hot and sizzling throughout the meal which was lovely. He also thoroughly enjoyed his meal.

The Desserts

We were all too full to have desserts on our visit however the choice looked great. Whilst we were there I did see some other tables order dessert and they seemed to enjoy it as left empty plates. They appeared well served and good sized portions.

Drinks at The Hare and hounds

The drinks were good value and of course all very tasty! They had cocktails available at 2 for £6 so of course, we had to try those out. They were lovely and definitely worth the money! All the drinks were served in appropriate glasses with fruit and looked great.

Facilities and cleanliness

From the minute we arrived at the pub/restaurant we noticed it was extremely clean. Staff were around tidying up immediately after people had left and kept the whole place constantly looking good.

All staff were helpful and knowledgeable about what they served. We were served by a trainee at one point but what she did not know she was quick to ask a colleague to help with.

The toilets were clean and tidy as to be expected. Well stocked and everything they need to be. No complaints at all from us on the whole cleanliness and facilities there.
